Community Art Project
Project Description
The project first started out as one of the two initial proposals for possible community art concepts that I’ve initially drafted and among the two this one was more complex. Especially since I'm using a medium I'm not quite familiar with compared to the other proposal being more graphic design based. But during the conceptualization stage however, I realized that I wanted to take bigger risks in my art and use my newfound skills in welding from Materials Class, with the next question being more on where can I create something like this and what would be the perfect project to help my chosen community. After hearing some of the ideas proposed by my classmates for their own project proposals, I greatly considered something that was beneficial for either my family or friends back in Cavite considering that we do have some scrap metal at home and power tools were available if I were to push through with this creative project. After reevaluation of possible community problems, the idea of creating a more organized space for the bikes sounded like a very valid concern since we didn’t have a dedicated space to store all our bikes.
Fixing this problem can also help encourage my family members to start using their bikes more often which could in turn help with their overall physical health. The logical option to solving the problem was to create a small bike rack for storage. And as I checked with my mom to ask if the project was feasible, I started drafting the initial design structure and had it confirmed via email.
After approval I went to plan a date where I can go visit Cavite to start on the project. When the day finally came to go home, I asked some help from my dad with sourcing the materials needed and had adjusted the design to fit what was available. As to my surprise my bike, which I borrowed from my aunt, was also recently taken back leaving 2 bikes left in storage. This change was then applied when I restructured the original design. The downside was that I wasn’t able to create the initial storage area within the rack since we didn’t have enough metal to make it possible. When building the project itself I asked for some help from my dad with some of the more dangerous parts of the process like welding and cutting but I was still the one to finish up on the project.
After everything has been finished, I showed the final output to both my parents and based from their reactions, they were pleased with the results. Currently the bike rack remains in Cavite and is now used to hold both my dad and brother’s bike indoors.
